The bacon beetle ( Dermestes maculatus ) is a beetle from the family of bacon beetles (Dermestidae).

features

The beetles are brown or black and reach a size of five to ten millimeters. The elytra are provided with a black hair, in which white hairs are interspersed. There are more white hairs on the sides of the pronotum. These are turned inwards at an angle, the label is hairy yellowish. The hair on the top can also be monochrome black or gray. Both the females and the males have small thorns at the terminal ends of the elytra . The largest of these thorns is located at the splayed wing seam tip. The antennae are colored rust-brown, the legs are dark brown. The underside of the beetle is white.

Occurrence

The bacon beetle is a common pest of fatty foods such as bacon and dried fish. He is a culture follower .

Use in skeleton preparation

Dermestes maculatus is the type of carrion beetle typically used by universities and museums to remove meat from bones in skeleton making. This method has been used for over 150 years.
