Dorome

Dorome is a local specialty of Kochi Prefecture in Japan . In the Tosa dialect , dorome refers to fried sardines about 2-3 cm in length. These are freshly prepared and eaten with a dip made from pureed garlic leaves , vinegar and miso . Dorome is often served together with alcoholic beverages in bars and pubs.

The city of Akaoka in Kochi Prefecture celebrates a Dorome Festival every year. The main event is a drinking competition between men and women, which consists in drinking an oversized masu full of sake (1.8 l for men, half for women) as quickly as possible. The record in 2006 was 12.5 seconds and 10.8 seconds. There are also Dorome parties on the coast, a children's Dorome dance and a fishing boat parade.
