Dorothea of the East
Dorothea von der Osten (* 1896 in Misselwarden , † 1985 in Wiesbaden ) was a German photographer .
Life
The daughter of a farmer married the tobacco merchant Reinhard Hempell in 1916. In 1932 she completed an apprenticeship as a photographer with Erna Lendvai-Dircksen . Pictures of Dorothea von der Ostens were published in numerous magazines and magazines; she sold her works through the photo agency Fotok in Berlin . In addition to reports on socio-political issues, object studies, landscape photographs, advertising images and portraits formed the focus of her work. In 1936 she documented, among other things, how the gorilla Bobby , a public favorite of the Berlin zoo , was groomed after his death.
From 1950 Dorothea von der Osten lived in Wiesbaden.
The photographer's estate is in the Folkwang Museum's photographic collection .
