Dorothy Ng'ambi Tembo

Dorothy Ng'ambi Tembo is a Zambian diplomat and UN official . She is Deputy Executive Director of the International Trade Center (ITC) and was acting head of the ITC from January to July 2020.

Life

Dorothy Ng'ambi Tembo graduated from the University of Zambia in Lusaka with a degree in economics .

Tembo initially worked in various positions in the Zambian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Trade and Industry and in the National Commission for Development Planning. Between 2000 and 2003 she worked as a deputy team leader in the US development project USAID RAPID in Botswana , which supported the countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in introducing the SADC trade protocol. From 2003 to 2004 Tembo worked as a consultant for the USAID project ZAMTIE in Lusaka, which supported the growth of trade and investments in Zambia through cooperation between the Zambian Ministry of Economic Affairs and the private sector.

The next position from 2004 to 2008 was the position of chief trade representative and director for foreign trade in the Zambian Ministry of Economic Affairs. One of the main tasks was to lead the Zambian delegation to the 2005 WTO Ministerial Conference in Hong Kong in its function as coordinator for the group of the least developed countries (LDCs) according to the UN definition . At the conference, it was decided to facilitate market access to the LDC countries and set up trade aids and an extensive supporting program.

In October 2008 Tembo moved to the WTO and until 2013 was Executive Director of the Enhanced Integrated Framework (EIF), a joint initiative of various international organizations to strengthen the trade capacities of the world's poorest countries.

In 2014 she was appointed Deputy Executive Director of the International Trade Center (ITC) . She had already worked with the director of the ITC, Arancha González , at the WTO. When González surprisingly became the new Spanish Foreign Minister in January 2020 , Dorothy Ng'ambi Tembo took over as acting Executive Director of the ITC until the office was taken over regularly by the Jamaican Pamela Coke-Hamilton in July 2020.
