The Dorset Naga chili is a cultivated form of the pepper species Capsicum chinense . According to growers Michael and Joy Michaud from West Bexington , Dorset in the UK , it is one of the hottest chillies in the world. Measurements on samples of the fruit resulted in values averaging 923,000 Scoville units .

description

According to the breeders, the Dorset Naga is a breed based on the Naga Morich variety , which originated in Bangladesh and came to Great Britain through British people of Bangladeshi origin. The properties of the plants were stabilized over a period of 5 years through selection based on plant size, rapid ripening time, size and shape of the fruits. Fruits from the 2005 harvest were dried, ground and sent to two laboratories in the USA for analysis by HPLC methods. The results were 970,000 and 876,000 Scoville units, respectively, for an average of 923,000 Scoville units.

In the meantime, similarly high Scoville values have been measured in fruits of the closely related Naga Jolokia variety .

Previous and future leaders

The hottest chilli until the Dorset Naga's peak heat was announced was the Red Savina , which also belongs to the Capsicum chinense species . Since 1994 it has been entered in the Guinness Book of Records as the hottest chilli in the world with a heat of 577,000 Scoville units . However, these values have not yet been reproduced by other breeders.

In 2012 the Dorset Naga was pushed to second place by the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion , and in 2013 by the Carolina Reaper to third place of the hottest chili peppers. Both cultivated forms have peak values of over 2,000,000 Scoville units.
