The Carolina Reaper is a cultivated form of the capsicum chinense pepper species . In November 2013, this variety received the entry in the Guinness Book of Records as the hottest chilli variety in the world, displacing the previous leader Trinidad Moruga Scorpion from first place. The measured peak value of the Carolina Reaper was over 2.2 million Scoville units, the calculated average value was 1,569,300 Scoville units.

description

The original name HP22B stands for " High Power, Pot 22, Plant B " and was given by its breeder Ed Currie to the PuckerButt Pepper Company in Fort Mill , South Carolina . It is not known which strains the parents are. Various sources mention a Naga variant from Pakistan and a Caribbean Habanero as parents.

Health risks

A health-promoting effect of spicy foods is now proven, as the IKK explains on its website. Nevertheless, in the same article she warns that when consuming extremely spicy foods there is a fundamental risk of overreactions such as dizziness, nausea and circulatory problems. Furthermore, allergic reactions to components of the pod are generally possible, which can lead to anaphylactic shock . In April 2018, a 34-year-old man was hospitalized in New York after participating in a chilli contest with Carolina Reaper, complaining of an extreme headache. This reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome results from the narrowing of certain areas of the arteries in the brain. This is the first known case in which the thunderbolt headache - so named because it occurs in fractions of a second like a hammer blow - occurred in connection with chili consumption.
