Entrance to the fish market

The Dory Fish Market is a fishing fleet in Newport Beach in the US state of California .

The fleet, founded in 1891, is not anchored in port, but is located directly on the beach of the Pacific Ocean at the foot of Newport Pier . The fishermen offer their catches in a rustic wooden crate on Oceanfront Boulevard.

history

The Dory Fishing Fleet was founded in 1891. At that time it comprised a number of around 20 boats. The Newport Beach Historical Society took the associated fish market in 1969 as a Local Landmark . A fishing ban imposed for protection purposes caused the fleet to shrink by around half in 2002. The city then successfully supported the state of California for its continued existence.

Today the fishing fleet is the only remaining one of its kind in the United States . It consists of small open dory boats five to six meters in length. Every morning from 7 a.m., the freshly caught fish is brought ashore and offered for sale in the stalls.
