Newport Pier

The Newport Pier is one of the two piers in Newport Beach in the US state of California . The historic building is centrally located on the so-called Balboa Peninsula and protrudes about 314.6 meters into the Pacific Ocean . The impressive wooden structure is registered as California Historical Landmark No. 794.

Building

The pier is a place for fishing , strolling and eating out. There is a restaurant at the far end. From Newport Pier you can overlook the city or watch the numerous surfers . The building at the base of the building houses a lifeguard unit from the Newport Beach Fire Department .

The Dory Fishing Fleet, founded in 1891, is located at the foot of the pier . The fishing fleet , located directly on the beach, is one of the last of its kind in the area. A little further to the east is the Balboa Pier .

history

The original quay at this point was McFadden Wharf . It was named after James and Robert McFadden, who then owned the surrounding land. The ship landing stage was completed in 1889 and served as a goods transfer point. A little later it was connected to the railway. The plant served to supply Orange County , San Bernardino County and Riverside County .

In 1906, Newport Beach was finally founded. From then on, Newport Pier played an important role in the further development of the city. Between 1902 and 1910, William S. Collins bought large parts of their properties from the McFaddens, recognizing the area's tourist potential. In the following time, the area was increasingly developed.

Even today, the pier is a popular leisure destination for locals and holidaymakers. From many different angles there is a wonderful view over the sea and the coastline of Orange County .
