The Doschtschanik ( Russian Дощаник ) was a flat- going , wooden barge with a mast in former Russia . The name goes back to the construction of broad, roughly worked boards: The Russian adjective for something made of boards is doshchaty ( Russian дощатый ). The flat-bottomed boat was mainly used for freight transport on the rivers and in their estuaries. Since the boat type was built in very different sizes, it had load capacities from 30 to 80 tons. One of the uses was to make it available for loading and unloading the large ships anchored in the estuaries. It was propelled by sails and oars. Often, were Doschtschaniki towed . In the 19th century, the ships were 15 to 25 meters long and 4 to 6.5 meters wide. The draft is given as up to 1.2 meters. The height of the freeboard reached 1.5 meters. The carrying capacity in this ship size was between 30 and 80 tons.
