Dovecot ( English for dovecote ) is a mail server software suite . It is designed as a Mail Delivery Agent (MDA) and for the network protocols POP3 and IMAP .

The software suite works under Unix , BSD and Unix systems such as Linux . It is open source with parts in the public domain and others under LGPL or MIT license as well as stand-alone licenses. In March 2015, Open-Xchange announced the merger with Dovecot OY, Timo Sirainen's company. This means that even large e-mail providers can be offered a complete application stack from a single source.

features

Dovecot is designed for small (200 mailboxes) to larger networks (over 1000 mailboxes). The server can handle the mailbox formats maildir and mbox and is fully compatible with the older Courier IMAP server and the old UW IMAP reference server software for the IMAP protocol. The e-mail data can be easily migrated or used in e-mail programs; computer users can log into the Dovecot mail server directly.

As of version 1.0a4, a Dovecot-specific format called dbox is also being processed, which is intended for high-performance applications. So far, dbox has not been compatible with other software, so emails saved in the dbox format can only be accessed via Dovecot. H. from e-mail programs ( MUA ) via IMAP and POP3 and from MTAs using the delivery components in Dovecot.

Dovecot supports the following features, among others:

  • IMAP4rev1
  • THREAD, IDLE and SORT extensions
  • POP3
  • LMTP as the protocol for e-mail delivery
  • Sieve
  • TLS / SSL
  • IPv6
  • Maildir ++ quota
  • Postfix and exim (from version 4) can work together with Dovecot

safety

The main focus in programming is on safety. A premium on exploits has been suspended since the beginning of 2006 . Dovecot is thus in the tradition of qmail .

The Dovecot program package is also divided into three components:

The two other components can optionally be installed in addition to the core component. For a pure Dovecot IMAP server, for example , Dovecot pop3d does not need to be installed, which indirectly also increases security.

In November 2016, the German IT security company Cure 53 carried out a security audit for the Dovecot package on behalf of the Mozilla Foundation and, as a result, was able to uncover three vulnerabilities, which, however, were classified as less critical by the security experts at Cure 53.

history

The first test version came out in July 2002; version 1.0.0, which has since been almost completely reprogrammed, was published in April 2007.

With version 2.2, Dovecot has been expanded to include additional functions; Essentially, new IMAP command extensions were implemented, dsync was newly developed and optimized, and shared mailboxes were extended by per-user flags.

Dovecot has been used instead of the IMAP server Cyrus since generation 10.6 of the Mac OS X Server operating system from Apple .
