Dragan Primorac (born June 7, 1965 in Banja Luka ) is a Croatian doctor, pediatrician, geneticist and forensic scientist. He is a professor at Penn State University and the University of New Haven, as well as medical faculties in Split and Osijek and universities in Rijeka and Xi'an Jiaotong University , College of Medicine and Forensics in China. He is co-founder of the forensic department, co-founder of the University in Split and chairman of the board of the special hospital St. Katarina. From December 2003 to July 2009 he was Croatian Minister for Science, Education and Sport.

Life

Primorac was born in Banja Luka in 1965, but the family soon moved to Split, where Primorac grew up. Dragan Primorac studied human medicine at the University of Zagreb and graduated in 1991 in Split. In the same year he went to the United States and worked there as a research assistant at the University of Connecticut Medical School. In 1997 he received his doctorate from the University of Zagreb on the role of mRNA in osteogenesis imperfecta . He also trained at numerous forensic institutes in the USA.

Scientific work as a doctor

He was named Global Penn State Ambassador by the Senate of Penn State University, for the first time in the history of the university. Currently (as of 2018) he is Chairman of the Board for International Relations at the USA Academy for Forensics and Chairman of the Board of the International Society of Applied Biological Science.

In total, he published 200 scientific papers, congress reports, chapters in the books, 90 of which he published scientific papers in journals and which are cited in Current Contentsu (CC) and Science CitationIndexu (SCI). As a visiting professor, he took part in more than 100 scientific congresses around the world and has won 16 international and domestic awards and recognitions. During his work in the USA, he and his team explained how glass bone disease (Osteogenesis Imperfecta Type I) develops in children. In this context, he received the American Young Researcher Prize awarded by the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research. Immediately afterwards he explained the transport mechanism of RNA with an early termination code (model Nanomelia). At Thomas Jefferson University, he received the Outstanding Platform Presentation Award from the East Coast Connective Tissue Society. He was one of the first scientists in the world to use DNA analysis for the purpose of identifying the skeletons of the rest of the tombs. He is the author of the work on the genetic origin of European men by analyzing the Y-kromosome, which was also published in 2001 in the journals Science and Nature, which also from a genetic point of view means a great advancement in terms of understanding the migration of the anatomically modern People 75,000 years ago. The special focus of his area of ​​interest is the implementation of the principles of personalized medicine in clinical application as well as the treatment of osteoarthritis through new procedures including the use of microfragmented adipose tissue containing stem cells.

He worked and continued his professional education at the most prestigious institutions such as the University of Connecticut, Health Center, Department of Pediatrics, Farmington, Connecticut, USA; State of Connecticut, Division of State Police, Meriden, Connecticut, USA; Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Rockville, Maryland, USA; Analytical Genetic Testing Center, Inc. Denver, CO, USA; St. Christopher's Hospital for Children at Allegheny University of the Health Sciences, Department of Pediatric Surgery, Philadelphia, etc. He is the recipient of 21 international and domestic awards such as The Young Investigator Award (American Society for Bone and Mineral Research, 1992), The Michael Geisman Fellowship Award (Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation, 1993), The Life Time Achievement Award ( Henry C. Lee's Institute of Forensic Science , 2002), The Award of the Italian Region Veneto (his great contribution to the promotion of science in the EU, 2007 ), The University of New Haven's International Award for Excellence (University of New Haven, 2010) and Presidential Award by the President of the International Association of Forensic Sciences (for contribution in forensic science, 2011). He is an honorary citizen in 5 cities inside and outside Croatia. In 2015 he was awarded a medal from the Danica series with the figure of Ruđer Bošković for his extraordinary contribution to the development of Croatian, but also worldwide science , and on October 5, 2015 he received the National Science Prize.

From December 2003 to July 2009 Primorac was Croatian Minister for Science, Education and Sport. He was the first Croatian minister responsible for the entire Croatian education system (pre-school, elementary school, middle school and university) and for science and sport (until his term in office two ministers carried out this separately: the minister for science and sport and the minister for science and technology). According to a study by the American International Republican Institute (IRI) in 2007, the Croatians considered him the most successful minister in government. One of the most important developments of his tenure was the largest increase in the budget for education and science.

Sports

In his youth he was Taekwondo vice-champion in Yugoslavia and played for the juniors in the Hajduk Split football club . During the 33rd meeting of the European Olympic Committees in Dubrovnik in 2004, he received the silver plaque of the European Olympic Committees for his services in the field of sport. For his services in the development of Taekwondo, he was made a member of the Taekwondo Hall of Fame (USA) in 2015.
