Dragon Island is an island in the Hauraki Gulf off the North Island of New Zealand . It is located off the northeast coast of the Great Barrier Island , 95 km northeast of Auckland .
The island protects Harataonga Bay on Great Barrier Island from easterly and southeastern winds. The island itself is in relatively calm water as it is sheltered by the larger Rakitu Island to the north of Dragon Island.
The island is privately owned and used to be used for agriculture. Today it is bushy.
