Three-state theory

The three-state theory is a term coined by Nikita Khrushchev in the course of the Berlin ultimatum in November 1958. It describes the division of Germany into West Germany and the GDR or East Germany as well as the “demilitarized Free City of Berlin ”. The three-state theory was not recognized in the western world from the start.

This term was later used to describe the official assessment of the Berlin question from the perspective of the German Democratic Republic .
