Interior of the church

The current parish and former monastery church of the Premonstratensian women was consecrated in 1216. It is a three-aisled basilica with a transept, large choir bay and apse. Two chapels were added to the chancel, and the southern St. Barbara chapel was expanded in the 15th century. On the east side the church was originally equipped with two round towers. The foundation of the north tower has remained visible outside the church. The central nave has a star vault, the side aisles are spanned with ribbed vaults.

In the 18th century the church was rebuilt in the Baroque style and received a new facade and furnishings , while the original Romanesque appearance was made unrecognizable. The baroque facade from the first half of the 18th century is flanked by two baroque towers with helmet roofs.

When the church was renovated in 1946, a thick layer of plaster was removed from six Romanesque columns. The seventh pillar has not yet been revealed. Two of the column shafts are richly decorated with figural bas-reliefs depicting virtues and vices. In addition to Strzelno, columns of this type are only found in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela and in St. Mark's Basilica in Venice . Its creation is dated to the second half of the 12th century or the beginning of the 13th century.

Above the entrance to the St. Barbara Chapel on the south side there is a Romanesque donor tympanum with the figures of St. Anna, the Virgin Mary, still holding the baby ( Anna selbdritt ), and the kneeling figures of the founder Piotr Wszeborowic with the model of the church and a woman with a book in their hands. The blessing hand of God is shown below. The Latin inscription runs along the upper edge of the tympanum: “TE VELVT OPTARAT HOC DONO PETRVS HONORAT VIRGINIS ANNA PIE MATER VENERANDA MARIE” (“Anna, venerable mother of the pious Virgin Mary, with this gift Peter honors you, who previously wished for this ").

The Annunciation tympanum was found during the renovation work. It is located in the lapidarium in the monastery building. In the middle is the figure of the Virgin Mary with the gesture of obedience, on the right the Archangel Gabriel, who points to the dove above Mary's head, on the left the tree of life.

The three-pass tympanum of the north portal was built in the 13th century. It depicts the Maiestas Domini - Christ enthroned in a mandorla held by two angels . Below are the animal-headed figures of the Evangelists - St. Luke (bull) and St. Mark (lion), accompanied by the apostles Peter and Paul.

The five baroque confessionals (1741), painted green, show pictures from the Bible with Polish inscriptions.
