Trinity Cathedral (Saint Petersburg)

According to Russian tradition, each imperial regiment had its own cathedral.

The Trinity Cathedral , also called Izmailovsky Cathedral, ( Russian Троицкий собор , Troitski sobor , Троице-Измайловский , Troize-Ismailowskij sobor ) is a Russian Orthodox cathedral in the center of Saint Petersburg and one of the most striking buildings in the city. It was built as a garrison church for the Izmailovsky regiment .

history

The central building, built in the late Classicist style from 1828 to 1835 according to plans by the architect Vasily Petrowitsch Stassow (1769–1848) on the plan of a Greek cross, is crowned by a large central dome and four smaller secondary domes. The domes are characterized by their unusual blue color and are studded with gold stars. The arrangement of the dome and the floor plan correspond to the old Russian tradition, the porticos on the cross-arm facades correspond to the classicism imported from Western Europe.

As a result of the Russian Revolution , much of the church's treasures were looted in 1922 and the church was finally closed in 1938. It then served as a warehouse for the Ministry of Post and was only returned to the Russian Orthodox Church in 1990.

Fire during restoration (2006)

In 2004 restoration work began to restore the church to its pre-revolutionary state. On August 25, 2006, a major fire occurred on the scaffolding surrounding the main dome, which caused the main dome, one of the largest and most important wooden domes in Europe, and one of the secondary domes to collapse. The three other side domes were damaged by the fire.

However, thanks to the efforts of passers-by, all church treasures could be brought to safety. The damage nevertheless amounted to several million euros. At the end of 2007, the fire damage was repaired. Further work was carried out in 2008 and 2009, and the church was reopened in 2010.
