Calumma globifer is a relatively large chameleon from the genus Calumma, endemic to Madagascar . The species was discovered in 1879 by the zoologist Albert Günther.

habitat

Distribution area

Calumma globifer lives in the rainforests of eastern Madagascar at 700 to 1300 meters above sea level. Locations are the regions around Antananarivo , Betatao and Mandraka ; deposits in Marojejy and Tsaratanana are uncertain .

features

The females of C. globifer are with a head-torso length of 14.5 centimeters and a tail length of 31 centimeters smaller than the males, who can have a head-torso length of 17 centimeters and a tail length of 39 centimeters. The only low helmet is directed backwards and apart from a small nasal process in the males other head appendages are not or only weakly developed. Both a back and a stomach crest are not pronounced in this species. As with many chameleons, the coloration consists of brown, yellow, green and gray hues. On the sides of the animals, a thick, variably colored stripe and three or more diagonal stripes run horizontally from head to tail. Calumma ambreense and C. oshaughnessyi are similar species, but C. ambreense has a different coloration and in C. oshaughnessyi a ridge is pronounced and the nasal processes of the males are longer than in C. globifer . Calumma globifer is classified by the system in a chameleon subgroup, the Calumma parsonii group.

reproduction

Nothing is known about the courtship and mating of the animals. Pregnant females exported from Madagascar produced clutches of 25 eggs; no information is available about successful incubation.
