The hospital church in Bludenz

The Dreifaltigkeitskirche is a Roman Catholic church in the city of Bludenz at Kirchgasse 4.

The still existing former hospital church at No. 4 reminds of the former hospital at Kirchgasse 2. The construction of the hospital and hospital church is assumed around 1300. The consecration of the hospital church on February 16, 1472 in honor of the Most Holy Trinity by Bishop Burkhard Dubenfluck from the Diocese of Chur is documented. The church fell victim to three city fires, in 1491, 1638 and 1682. The church was restored by architect Josef Gort between 1682 and 1686, consecrated in 1694, and has been preserved in this form and furnishings to this day.

The Heilig-Geist-Kirche was primarily used as a hospital and town hall church. The city hospital - a hostel for frail city dwellers and poor travelers - was located right next to the church, which was rebuilt after the city fire of 1682. It contains remarkable sculptures by the Tyrolean Baroque sculptor Melchior Lechleitner from Grins. The votive picture above the entrance gate in the church shows the oldest view of Bludenz at the bottom left, during the conflagration of 1638. 1)

Since the beginning of the 17th century the church has been the seat of the Elogi Brotherhood , which holds its Friars Day here on July 2nd. The hospital church was given in 1619 by Pope Clement XI. the right to indulgence . The church became the home of the Rosary . For the city council, the church functioned as a chapel, where councilors gathered for prayer before the weekly meeting. The church was handed over to the Italian-speaking population for use between 1932 and 1938. The National Socialists put the church into use as a magazine in 1940, a use that continued after the war until 1959. After a restoration under Pastor Adolf Ammann, the church has been used as a church again since 1960. The interior of the church was extensively restored between 2008 and 2009 and reopened on Corpus Christi .

The east-facing nave with retracted choir stands with the gable facade with a pointed arch portal in the lane, the short bell tower with a pointed helmet is placed on the nave ridge. Above the portal in a round arch niche is the figure of Maria by Melchior Lechleitner from 1685. The interior is from 1686, the high altar is by Johann Purtscher, figures by Andreas Dobler, crucifixus, figures and choir stalls by Melchior Lechleitner.
