Dreikönigenhaus (Trier)

The Epiphany 2008

The Dreikönigenhaus on Simeonstraße in Trier not far from the Porta Nigra is an early Gothic residential building that emerged from a Romanesque residential tower . The name comes from a painting of the Epiphany that once hung in this house.

Originally the house was called "Zum Säulchen" and was built in 1230. The main entrance was on the 1st floor (above today's right entrance) and could only be reached via a train staircase. In the event of danger, this could be caught and belongings were secured. In Trier there were probably seven to ten such well-fortified residential towers, of which, besides the Epiphany, only the Jerusalem tower and the Frankenturm have survived. These towers served as the residence of wealthy and politically influential families; the Dreikönigenhaus probably belonged to a Trier family of lay judges.

After various renovations, the building was restored in 1938 and 1973, especially during the first repairs, attempts were made to restore the medieval state as much as possible.

architecture

The architectural development of the building from a Romanesque residential tower to an early Gothic residential building can be seen particularly well in the windows on the various floors and at the end of the gable. The entrances on the ground floor date from a later time, but today's color scheme is based on the medieval condition. The Dreikönigenhaus is also noteworthy as an example of the preservation of monuments in the pre-war period, which endeavored to trace it back to its medieval appearance as precisely and scientifically as possible.
