Driescher cross
The Driescher Kreuz is a crossroads in the city center of Bergisch Gladbach . It stands on a small piece of lawn in the Driesch district on the corner of Hauptstrasse / Kalkstrasse between the footpath / bike path and the Driescher roundabout.
description
The cross is about two meters high. It is assembled from individual larger stones. On the lower plinth it bears the following inscription:
"JESUS CHRISTO CRUCIFIXO ET SANCTO ROCHO INCOLAE VICINIMEPIE EREXERUNT"
Translated it means: Jesus Christ crucified and Saint Roch erected by the local residents.
history
In 1799 the plague broke out in Gronau , to which the Driesch district belonged at the time . People were very afraid of being infected. They gathered in the evening and prayed together to Saint Rochus that he would help them. The prayers seemed successful, and everyone was spared the plague. In gratitude for this, they built the cross in honor of the saint and made it a regular target in processions.
The so-called Driescher Kreisel was planned until 2007 and put into operation in 2008. Most of the houses in the former Driesch district had to be demolished. Only in the main street were the houses spared. The Driescher cross could, however, remain in its old place.
monument
The cross is entered under no. 63 in the list of architectural monuments in Bergisch Gladbach .
