Drop-out (technology)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In tape playback , drop-outs (also known as dropouts ) are volume fluctuations or interruptions in the sound, which are caused by insufficient pressure of the magnetic tape on the tape head , defects in the tape material or dirt between the head and the tape.

With video magnetic tapes , drop-outs are noticeable as bright points or lines running across the screen. With DV an entire picture can fail and with HDV there can be dropouts of up to half a second.

In electrical engineering, the dropout voltage describes the minimum required difference between the input and output voltage of a voltage regulator .
