You fait de cuisine

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Du fait de cuisine (German: From cooking ) is one of the oldest surviving cookbooks in Europe and thus one of the key works for exploring the food culture of the Middle Ages . It was written by Chiquart , head chef at the court of Amadeus VIII of Savoy , from 1420 onwards.

The Romance scholar and nutrition historian Terence Scully describes it as the first real cookbook in Europe because it not only lists the ingredients for individual dishes, but also provides detailed information on the preparation of a number of dishes. Chiquart also gives his reader tips on how to cope with the extensive logistics of a medieval banquet .
