Duck Attack! is an action-adventure - Computer game of AtariAge that in July 2010 at the Classic Gaming Expo in Las Vegas appeared. It was developed by Will Nicholes as homebrew for the Atari 2600 game console.

action

A mad scientist bred mutant fire-breathing ducks that lay radioactive plutonium eggs. The player has to collect the eggs to prevent the scientist from using them to build a world destruction machine. In doing so, the player must avoid the ducks and other dangers.

Course of the game

The player uses a joystick to control a robot. The robot explores the scientist's stable, collects eggs, weapons and other items. If two eggs are found and brought to the exit, the player will be promoted to a higher level.

The player starts with three “lives” (robots) and loses a life if he is eaten by a duck or hit by its fire or other deadly object. Additional lives and powers can be gained by collecting colored balloons. The player can decide whether all objects are in fixed or random places in the room.

The idea for Duck Attack! was created by modifying the Atari 2600 game Adventure . Like most Atari 2600 games, Duck Attack! 128 bytes of RAM for all game variables and a call stack (call stack). The game relies on an unusual kernel technique that can produce graphics that are larger and show more detail than other Atari 2600 games.

reception

French retrogaming magazine Pix'n Love noted the game's originality and depth in its July 2010 issue. The Video Game Critic gave the game a C rating and mentioned “a really weird homage to Adventure”, “sense of discovery”, but also “confusing mazes” ("Confusing labyrinths") and "arbitrary rules" ("arbitrary rules"). The reviewer noted, "The programmer's appreciation for the classics shines through". In April 2011, 1UP.com named Duck Attack! as one of "31 Homebrew Games Worth Playing". The AV Club described the game as “an oddity: It's a wholly modern 2600 game that's actually fun and as awesomely weird as old 2600 games like Frankenstein's Monster ” (“A curiosity: a very modern game that is actually fun and so wonderfully crazy is like old games, Frankenstein's Monster for example. ”). Blistered Thumbs' reviewer Justin Carmical rated Duck Attack! in his December 2010 comparison, "Top 5 New Games for Old Consoles", as number 4: "The graphics are pretty smooth, and it looks like a pseudo-clone of Adventure , but don't let that fool you. The gameplay is quick, and that darn duck just follows you everywhere "(" Graphics are pretty slick and it looks like a pseudo clone of Adventure , but don't be fooled. The game is fast and the damn duck just follows you everywhere.").
