Duitsland Instituut Amsterdam

The Duitsland Instituut Amsterdam (DIA) is an independent scientific institute in association with the University of Amsterdam (UvA). The institute was founded in 1996 with the aim of improving and disseminating knowledge about Germany in the Netherlands at the intersection of education, science and society. It also initiates and promotes cross-border cooperation between networks and the exchange of knowledge.

The institute consists of five departments: Research, Education, Duitslandweb , Duitslanddesk and Public Relations. There is also a documentation center in the building that specializes in political and social developments in post-war Germany and the relationship between Germany and Europe and its transatlantic partners. This applies to both the FRG and the former GDR .

history

In 1995 the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science set up the Germany program for university teaching. As part of this program it was decided to set up an institute in the Randstad , which deals with politics, economy and history of Germany from a Dutch perspective. The institute was attached to the University of Amsterdam and officially opened on May 28, 1996 in the presence of Prince Claus . The first Scientific Director of the DIA was Maarten C. Brands , who was responsible for the management of the institute until 2002 and succeeded Ton Nijhuis . In 2002 it was decided to start the second phase of the Germany program, with the entire responsibility for the coordination and administration of the program being transferred to the DIA. In 2005 the decision was made for a third phase, which could build on the results of the previous programs. Another research focus of the new program is the influence of political, socio-economic and societal developments on Germany's future position. Apart from the Dutch Ministry of Education and the University of Amsterdam, the DIA was able to win a third permanent partner, and since 2001 there has been a permanent cooperation with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), which played an important role in the development of the graduate school .

research

The research department deals with the topics of history, politics, society and culture in contemporary Germany. The focus is on the areas of Germany and Europe, German foreign policy and party political changes in Germany today. The employees are also involved in the bachelor's and master's programs, including the master's degree in German studies. An important part of the department is the graduate college, a research network for doctoral students from various research directions, which supports them during their doctorate . Here we work closely with the DAAD .

education

The education department organizes courses and study trips for teachers and students of teacher training in German, history, geography, social studies and culture. The department also develops teaching materials and organizes activities for young people, e.g. For example, the Hiphop Student Day and the “Daarom Duits” advertising film competition to increase interest in Germany and the German language. The department also offers WebQuests for various subjects on the Duitslandweb website and coordinates the student editorial team.

Duitslandweb

The website Duitslandweb is in Dutch with information on current social developments in Germany. The independent editorial team updates the content daily with reports that provide background information on current debates in Germany. In addition, various dossiers and a detailed reference work, with the focus on history, politics, economics, literature, sport and film, offer the opportunity to delve into the various topics. A calendar provides an overview of cultural and scientific events in and around Germany in the Netherlands.

Duitslanddesk

The Duitslanddesk provides information on funding and scholarship programs from the Duitsland Instituut Amsterdam and the DAAD, and provides advice on starting a course of studies or planning a research stay in Germany. In addition, the desk organizes networking and information events, intensifies the cooperation between Dutch and German educational institutions and conducts research on the topic of cross-border student mobility between Germany and the Netherlands. In addition to local employees, the Duitslanddesk also has a DAAD editing department, which Henning Radke currently holds.

public relation

The press and public relations department organizes various activities related to political, social and cultural developments in Germany, e.g. B. Book presentations, debates, seminars and film screenings. These are often organized in cooperation with partner institutes and publishers.
