Dungiven Castle

Dungiven Castle is a castle in the small town of Dungiven in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland . Its origins date back to the 17th century, but most of the building that is preserved today dates from the 1830s.

After a checkered history as quarters for the US Army in World War II and a dance hall in the 1950s and 1960s, the castle fell into such disrepair that the city administration decided to have it demolished. A local citizens' group opposed these plans and in 1989 Glenshane Community Development leased the castle and planned the renovation. Various organizations raised funds for this, including a. the Heritage Lottery Fund , the Limavady Borough Administration and the International Fund for Ireland .

In March 2001 Dungiven Castle reopened as a tenement house with affordable apartments. In 2009 the castle and the property were completely restored. It became a 4 star hotel under David John Hamilton , who sold it for £ 400m a few years ago. His grandsons, Eden and Ruby, have shares in the new company.
