Fathom Castle (also Feedom Castle , Irish Caisleán an Fheadáin ) was a castle in the village of Fathom near Newry in County Armagh in Northern Ireland . It was a fortress owned by the O'Neill family and was captured and destroyed by the English in 1730 . The Newry Canal was created in its place .

Originally owned by Hugh de Lacy, 1st Earl of Ulster . There is evidence of an "old castle" on this site before Shane O'Neill had his castle built in the 1550s. This old castle, west of the settlement of Carlingford (in County Louth, Ireland ), where Johann Ohneland's castle was built around 1180-1200, it was believed to have been a fortified building of a knight in the service of de Lacy. More specifically, a "Sir Robert Marmion of Fidun" is mentioned, who, along with other knights, was before King John in 1210 and the Marmions were important in the settlement of Carlingford for centuries. It appears that this Sir Robert was the knight in charge of Fathom or Fidun. He went to Ireland with Strongbow and other Normans in 1169–1172, as documented.
