Dunglass Castle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dunglass Castle is a ruined castle in the Scottish administration unit West Dunbartonshire .

The castle was built between 1400–1542. A large section of a 7–8 meter high wall, a mixture of different construction periods, has been preserved to this day. A small, conical pigeon house has been preserved as a complete ruin on the south wall. Building blocks of the castle and the courtyard were used to repair the quay in 1735 on the instructions of the Commissioners of Supply . Near the western end of the wall and outside the south wall is a small landing pad for boats, apparently protected by a hurdle ; some of these consoles have been preserved to this day. In the north-west corner of the enclosure there is a residential building, some of it old, possibly dating back to 1590, but with large modern elements. The interior of this house is entirely modern. The round tower probably dates from the 17th century and appears to have been a pigeon house.

Historic Scotland has listed the castle ruins as a Category B Historic Building.
