Manure spreader in action (1954)

The manure spreader (more rarely manure spreader called) is a in the agriculture used special trailers for transport and deployment in the field of in livestock resulting solid manure (manure and bedding) or even of Champost and composts . With regard to transport to the place of application, the manure spreader must be set up for driving on public roads.

Previously, the dung was used as fertilizer by hand with a pitchfork applied, which is very time-consuming, especially for large amounts. Only since the 1950s have manure spreaders established themselves as an agricultural implement.

On the floor of the loading area of a manure spreader there is a scraper floor made of transverse strips that are connected by circulating chains. The scraper floor transports the manure to the end of the trailer, where it is milled off by the spreading unit with movable knives and at the same time shredded. The manure is then evenly distributed over the field by spreading rollers and / or plates. The spreading rollers can be mounted horizontally or vertically, depending on the type. The spreading width of wide plate spreaders can be up to 20 m. Scraper floor, spreading rollers and spreading discs are mostly driven by the power take-off shaft of the pulling tractor. But there are also manure spreaders with ground drive via the wheels, which are suitable for use with draft animals. In modern manure spreaders, the scraper floor is partly driven by a hydraulic motor via a gearbox . The application rate can easily be controlled via the volume flow for the oil motor. In the event of blockages, the scraper floor can simply be reversed (the conveying direction of the scraper floor reversed). In the case of large area spreaders, a hydraulically adjustable slider is often used in front of the spreading mechanism in order to improve metering. Since the manure is used to improve soil fertility and for fertilization , the application rate can be varied by the driving speed of the towing vehicle and the adjustable feed speed of the scraper floor. Optionally, weighing devices can also be integrated into the manure spreader, with which the spread rate can be precisely regulated by regulating the scraper floor speed.

The spreading unit can be dismantled in many ways so that the trailer can be used for other purposes outside of the fertilization time.

In horticulture , the manure spreader is used in spite of the poorer mixing results instead of more expensive stationary mixers to mix the various aggregates in the production of soil substrates.
