Dark mill

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Dunkelsche Mühle was a grain mill in Plettenberg from the 13th century until the 1950s . Its historical importance lies in the fact that it was mentioned in a document around 1300 and then in 1320 and that it could be assigned as property to the Counts of Plettenberg . It is also part of the city model of the historic city fortifications of Plettenberg , which can be seen in the Plettenberg home .

history

The grain mill was built on the flow around Plettenberg. Already in the 13th century it belonged to the Plettenberg knighthood and was mentioned in a document as "moele to Plettenbracht" in 1320 as part of a sales transaction between Johann von Plettenberg and Engelbert II von der Mark . After that, the mill changed hands many times, for example it came in part to the Counts of Arnsberg in the middle of the 14th century . As a continuity, however, it should be mentioned that at least half of the mill remained in the possession of the Counts of Plettenberg until it came back into the possession of the noble family in 1671. The respective family members were named accordingly Plettenberg de Molendino , Plettenberg von der Moelen and similar.

Although the town of Plettenberg was able to free itself from the general mill pressure in 1673 - the farmers were obliged to always have their grain ground by a specific mill - it had to grant the mill owners certain privileges. An example is the repair of the mill after the Thirty Years' War , during which the Plettenberg citizens had to provide appropriate services.

Further changes of ownership followed until the mill came into the possession of the miller Dunkel in 1826 , who gave the name today. He ordered the demolition of the old building and the establishment of a flour store at the same location. His descendants remained in possession of the mill until the end, even when it was in operation in 1895. a. with a new engine system, heavily modernized, paid for by the Plettenberger tram company . The background was essentially a contribution to improving urban transport.

The mill was then demolished in the 1950s; at that time the building was one of the three oldest in the city.
