A duplex house (also called " duplex house ") is a type of building , which is planning and structurally designed in two different phases of use. This building typology was developed by the Kiel working group for contemporary building eV in 1949 for the housing programs , especially for the ERP program 10,000 refugee apartments in Schleswig-Holstein, and published in several variants for practical use as type buildings and sample floor plans.

The basic idea of the duplex house is that the two apartments on the ground floor and first floor will be combined to form a single-family house if the housing shortage eases and the economic situation improves. . . . "

- Fritz Keller

Duplex houses are (as a rule, row house-like) buildings that were erected as a single carriage with at least two or three (rental) apartments each. The structure was 1½-storey (with an extended attic) or 2 to 2½-storey (with an attic that was often not developed at first). In the initial conception, the buildings were designed in such a way that the apartments could be merged as the tension on the housing market subsided. The merger should z. B. to larger apartments by including and distributing the rooms in the attic without (extensive) conversion work. A complete conversion of the building into a single-family house should also be possible. Duplex floor plans were also intended in multi-storey buildings for horizontal apartment consolidation.

In the ERP program 10,000 refugee apartments, more than 2,000 apartments were built in duplex houses as ERP type H (SH type 160). In total, more than 20,000 duplex houses were built in Schleswig-Holstein as part of social housing in the 1950s .
