Dupree Bolton

BEWIS Dupree Bolton (* 3. March 1929 in Oklahoma City , † 5. June 1993 ) was an American trumpeter of hard bop .

Live and act

Dupree Bolton left his home at the age of 14 and played in 1944 with Buddy Johnson in New York, with whom the first recordings were made (“That's the Stuff You're Gotta Watch”). In 1945 he became a member of Benny Carter's big band . He left the music scene in 1946; his career was interrupted by substance abuse . He then gained some notoriety through his participation in recordings by Harold Land , who discovered him in a jazz club in Southside Los Angeles and had him participate in the 1959 session of "The Fox". He finally had to serve a prison sentence for a few years and played in the prison band in San Quentin with Art Pepper, who was also incarcerated there . In 1963 he formed a band with Curtis Amy ; they recorded together in 1963 the album Katanga for the record label Pacific Jazz . In the same year he also recorded with Onzy Matthews , Earl Anderza and Lou Rawls .

After another prison term, Bolton played briefly with Bobby Hutcherson in 1967 and spent the 1970s in rehab facilities in Oklahoma, where he also played in bands such as the Oklahoma Prison Band , with which he recorded for Uptown Records in 1980 . In the field of jazz, according to Tom Lord , he was involved in twelve recording sessions between 1944 and 1980. In 1982 he performed in Oklahoma City with Dexter Gordon ; after that he returned to the west coast of the USA and disappeared from the music scene.
