The Duroc pig is a breed of pig from the United States .

Breeding history

The origins of this ancient breed are obscure. Around 1800, red pig populations developed in the northeastern United States. The modern Duroc pig was created around 1830 from crosses of Red Jersey pigs from New Jersey and these old Durocs from New York .

Characteristics

  • Color light to dark red
  • Ears partially drooping
  • large-framed, sows up to 300 kg, boars up to 350 kg
  • Body of medium length
  • very good muscling

As a father breed, the Duroc pig forms the breeding basis for many crossbreeds.
