Durotriges

Celtic tribes in the south of England

The Durotriges were a Celtic tribe, or rather a loose association of smaller Celtic groups in the south-west of what is now England . There were several oppida on their territory , such as Hod Hill , Hambledon , South Cadbury and Maiden Castle . From around 100 BC Imported goods from the Mediterranean area can be observed in the Durotriges area. They minted coins as early as Celtic times, but these do not have any inscriptions, so that no names of rulers have been passed down. They are said to have put up violent resistance to the Roman conquest. Various oppida in their area show signs of violent fighting. In Roman Britain the Durotriges became a civitas . In Roman times, their main town was Durnovaria ( Dorchester (Dorset) ) and later Lindinis next to it , suggesting that this civitas was divided into two parts.
