Dwayne Smith (composer)

Dwayne Smith is an American composer and conductor.

Smith learned the flute and saxophone. During his school days he was a member of various wind orchestras, early music ensembles, but also rock and jazz bands. As a jazz musician, he has won various awards. In 1973 and 1974 he played in the California All Star High School Jazz Band as the first tenor saxophonist at the Monterey Jazz Festival

Smith studied composition with John Adams , Andrew Imbrie , Ingram Marshall and Elinor Armer at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (also with Terry Riley at Mills College) and conducting with John Adams, Michael Senturia and David Ramadanoff . He also took part in the Composer-to-Composer Symposium in Telluride, Colorado and the Carnegie Hall Professional Training Workshop with Pierre Boulez and the Ensemble Intercontemporain .

As Adams' assistant director of the Conservatory's New Music Ensemble , he has performed works by Gordon Mumma , Joan La Barbara and David Del Tredici . He has conducted at the Pacific Composers Forum , conducted radio performances and is the conductor and composer in residence of the Afro-American Chamber Music Society Orchestra .
