The Dyngjujökull is a glacier of Vatnajökull in Iceland .
Dyngjujökull lies west of Kverkfjöll and east of Bárðarbunga over a width of about 40 kilometers. From it springs from the east 1,446 meters high mountain Kistufell the Jökulsá á Fjöllum . The glacier tongue reaches a height of more than 1300 m .
On August 23, 2014, it was initially assumed that a small volcanic eruption had occurred under Dyngjujökull . This was preceded by numerous earthquakes since August 16, 2014, first on the Bárðarbunga, and later also in the Kistufell area. The Icelandic government then closed the airspace over the glacier and issued a warning to air traffic. However, the Icelandic airports initially remained open. The seismic activities also attracted a great deal of attention because memories of the eruption of Eyjafjallajökull in 2010 , which severely disrupted European air traffic, were still present. On August 24, it was determined that the suspected subglacial eruption had not occurred. The strong, low-frequency seismic signal that was observed must be due to other causes. The air traffic warning level was reduced from “red” to “orange”. On the night of August 28-29 , lava emerged in the Holuhraun lava field north of Dyngjujökull along a roughly 300-meter-long crevice . The alert level in the region was then raised to "red". International air traffic is not affected.
