E-dec

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term e-dec designates a central tool or customs software for “ cargo processing ” developed by the Federal Customs Administration (EZV) , which is intended to standardize existing IT-supported (cargo processing) procedures. Since the progress made so far and the projects implemented all apply to the sub-area of customs clearance of goods, the etymology of the term “e-dec” can very well be looked for in the Anglophone “electronic declaration”.

An IT-based customs clearance procedure, which - to put it simply - involves a customs declaration electronically, normally requires participation in a very proprietary messaging system . So some older part still valid method based this kind - not only in Switzerland - on messaging standards such as X.400 or FTAM and the (UN) EDIFACT as data format . "E-dec" should now do away with this - at least on the soil of the Swiss Confederation. For example, the "Import" application area released on January 1, 2006 is based on a typical web service architecture: XML is the data format and the "secure" SMTP ( X.509 ) is the messaging system .

The web service architecture of the "e-dec" opens up various possibilities for a simplified participation in the process itself, in particular for the connection of in-house applications to the process.
