E. Wedel is a traditional Polish chocolate manufacturer based in Warsaw .

history

The company was founded in Warsaw in 1851 under the name E. Wedel by Karl Wedel , an entrepreneur who immigrated from Germany . The company quickly became one of the largest and most popular chocolate manufacturers in Poland.

In Poland, the name Wedel is synonymous with high quality and a history steeped in tradition in the field of chocolate production and is of course associated with the company founder and his family.

However, the Wedel family has not been the majority owner of the company for a long time. Under the communist government, the company was nationalized and renamed "22 lipca". In 1989 E. Wedel was privatized again and in 1991 it was bought by PepsiCo . Finally, in 1999, the British luxury goods manufacturer Cadbury Schweppes took over the company from Pepsi for around US $ 76.5 million. After Kraft Foods took over Cadbury Schweppes, Wedel had to be sold due to conditions imposed by the EU Commission . This took place in June 2010 to the Korean-Japanese Lotte Group .

Key figures

Today E. Wedel also produces pastries and salty snacks in addition to various chocolate items. Wedel employs around 1100 people and operates a factory in Warsaw. In 1997, the company's net income was approximately $ 80 million.
