history

The first preliminary construction work began in 1997. The builders were Warimpex Finanz und Beteiligungs-AG and UBM Realitätenentwicklung Aktiengesellschaft together with the InterContinental Group and the general contractor, Porr . First of all, the old structure had to be torn down. The most important Polish jazz club, the Akwarium, also fell victim to the demolition. Residents of the surrounding apartment blocks protested against the construction project, they feared that the high-rise would cast shadows. Even the offer of the investor to renovate the affected buildings at his own expense could not satisfy the opponents of the project. Finally, a solution was found, to which the changed conception of the high-rise building with the free-standing northeast corner by using pillars, which enables the affected apartments to be exposed to sunlight, also contributed.

During the construction phase, a music video by the Polish hip-hop bands “Wzgórze Ya-Pa 3” and “Warszafski Deszcz” was shot on the site. The hotel opened on April 23, 2004. The hotel has received multiple awards - it received the EMEA Market Performance Award 2005 and the EMEA Quality Award in the same year . In 2007, the co-shareholders Warimpex and UBM took over the InterContinental Group's shares in the property. In August 2009 the singer Madonna was a guest of the hotel for a performance in Warsaw during her Sticky & Sweet Tour .
