E / OS ( E mulative O perating S ystem ) is a free , no more advanced Linux distribution and pursued the goal of once every ranges of leading operating systems through emulation to run.

overview

E / OS is based on a Linux kernel and should be used as a replacement or alternative for several operating systems, including Windows , Mac OS , BeOS , OS / 2 , DOS and Linux . Licensing through the GNU General Public License would have made it possible to obtain an independent alternative to the systems mentioned.

Thus, a single operating system would be able to run all popular programs. This is where the greatest challenge lies, as the originals - with the exception of Linux, which is also free - are not publicly documented and therefore have to be reproduced.

history

The project was started in 1995 with the aim of a free DOS. Until 1998 it was based solely on FreeDOS , later also on source code from Seal System .

In 2000 there was a major change in the E / OS project, with the focus then on Windows and Unix emulation. The sources now included Linux , FreeBSD , ReactOS , XFree86 and Wine .

The project has not been developed any further since July 1, 2008. It was in beta before being discontinued .
