The Penang Bridge ( Malay : Jambatan Pulau Pinang ) is a 13.5-kilometer cable-stayed bridge in Malaysia . It connects the city of Gelugor on Penang Island with Seberang Perai on mainland Malaysia.
Construction of the bridge began in 1980 and it was opened to public traffic on September 14, 1985. The construction costs amount to RM 800 million (EUR 175 million), excluding the costs for the property purchase. The construction work was carried out by a consortium led by Hyundai Engineering and Construction Company (Korea) Ltd and United Engineers Malaysia Berhad (UEM) .
The bridge is chargeable for all vehicles, whereby you only have to pay the toll on the way towards the island.
Due to chronic congestion, construction work began in 2007 to expand the low bridge sections from four to a total of six lanes. The cable-stayed bridge segment was already built with six lanes during construction.
Penang Island is connected to the mainland by a second bridge, the Second Penang Bridge . It is further south and was opened to traffic in March 2014.
