The Second Penang Bridge or the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge ( Malay : Jambatan Kedua Pulau Pinang or Jambatan Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah ) is a bridge in Malaysia that connects the southern part of Penang Island with the mainland.

history

The Penang Bridge , which opened in 1985, was no longer sufficient for the steadily increasing traffic, so the Malaysian government included a second bridge connection in the ninth Malay Development Plan, which was passed by parliament in 2007.

The state-owned company Jambatan Kedua Sdn Bhd (JKSB) received the concession in August 2008 , according to which it is responsible for the construction, management, operation and maintenance of the bridge. The construction work was entrusted to a consortium led by China Harbor Engineering Co Ltd (CHEC) . The preparatory work for the construction of the bridge began in 2007, the official start of construction work in the sea was November 8, 2008.

On June 6, 2013, shortly before the construction work was completed, part of the ramp collapsed at the end of the island. One driver was killed and three others were injured. On October 17th, the load tests of the bridge began.

Completion was originally planned for January 2011, but was later postponed to May 2012; However, both dates could not be kept, so that the completion was initially postponed to November 8, 2013, but was postponed to February 2014 after additional technical certifications and an expansion of the toll station .

The construction costs were initially estimated at around 3 billion ringgit , and in September 2013 construction costs of 4.5 billion ringgit were finally mentioned. The People's Republic of China is supporting the construction of the bridge with a loan.

The bridge was officially opened on March 1, 2014 by the sixth Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak and was named after the fourteenth elected Malaysian elected king , Yang di-Pertuan Agong , Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah of Kedah .

The 16.4 km long bridge leads from Batu Kawan in Seberang Perai to Batu Maung on the island of Penang and is part of a newly built 23.37 km long highway. A little more than a kilometer away from the island, the shipping route is crossed with a 475 m long cable-stayed bridge with a span of 240 m. The clearance height for ships is 30 m. The remaining part of the bridge consists of 298 precast concrete elements  , each 55 m long.

Initially, two pearl-shaped rest stops were planned in the middle, but these were not implemented. The bridge has six lanes , one in each direction reserved for motorcycles .
