The following improvements would be good: Revise the content in an understandable way, use or explain German terms. Add literature. - Pittimann visits me at 9:30 p.m. , Sep 1. 2010 (CEST)

This article deals with the standard test in English , grade 8 in Austria .

The Federal Ministry for Education, Art and Culture ( BMUKK ) has commissioned various Austrian educational and scientific institutions to prepare standard tests for the subjects German , English and mathematics . In the specifications on which these tests are based, those competencies are described which Austrian pupils should master in the 8th grade.

On the one hand, it should be made clear to the students which competencies are important for school and work, and on the other hand, the educational standards should represent an additional orientation for teachers in their teaching work.

The standard test is intended to reveal the strengths and weaknesses of the students and to give them further information about their future learning. At the teaching and school level, the school management and teachers can take measures to optimize teaching in parallel. In addition, this test creates a serious and comprehensible basis for comparison, which enables Austrian educational institutions and students to compare their skills with that of other students across Europe.

Educational standards

In general, the term " standard " is to be understood as a yardstick. Contrary to prevailing opinions, the Austrian educational standards are not a means of establishing a performance ranking, but rather an important part of the ongoing school development.

Pilot phase

2006

In Austria , the E8 standard test was carried out for the first time in 2006 in the 8th grade of the general secondary schools (AHS) , the general compulsory schools (APS) and the cooperative middle schools (KMS) . Around 7,000 students across Austria were tested in the receptive skills areas of listening and reading .

2007

In 2007 around 5,000 students were tested in listening and writing. In addition, 800 of these students were tested in writing .

2008

In 2008 around 1,300 students took part in the E8 standard test in Austria. The speaking area was also tested for the first time. In the course of the test, data was collected from all students, which should provide information about important factors such as gender , mother tongue , type of school or motivation to learn .

Baseline testing

As part of the baseline test for the 8th grade, a total of 205 schools and more than 10,000 pupils took part in three specified test dates in April and May 2009. The selection of the individual schools took place according to the principle of the stratified random sample. To participate in the test, up to three classes per school location were randomly selected for participation.

The subjects German , English (1st living foreign language) and mathematics were examined . In addition, 1,400 students were tested in English at the selected schools in the speaking competence area .

The baseline test was prepared and carried out by the Federal Institute for Educational Research, Innovation and Development of the Austrian School System (BIFIE) and its cooperation partners and, according to TIMSS 95, is the largest comprehensive assessment of competencies in Austria.

For the 4th grade, the baseline test will take place in spring 2010.

The results of the E8 standard test can be accessed online at www.bildungs-standards.at. During the test, the students receive an access code with which they can call up their results. The school principals and teachers receive anonymized information about the performance of their classes or students.

The individual skill areas - listening , reading , writing and speaking - are each divided into sub-areas. Information is provided both on the overall result and on the individual sub-areas.
