The EC Wels is an Austrian ice hockey club that is currently active in the 1st Upper Austrian regional league.

history

After the EC Wels was founded in early 1980, the team played for a long time in the lower leagues and only dared to make the leap into the upper league for a short time in the 2003/04 season . In the Upper Austrian state championship, however, the team was able to achieve their first and so far only championship title a little later in 2007. With the beginning of the 2009/10 season , however, a new path was taken, which should establish the club in the national leagues in the long term.

Goals for the future

The club management sees the entry into the big league as the first step towards professionalizing ice hockey in Wels. In the long term, the promotion and remaining in the national league should succeed, although this goal is currently not a priority given the unclear future development of the second league (see National League 2009/10 ). With Stanislav Medrik (the former captain of the Slovak national team ), work is also to be intensified in the field of youth development. By and large, the goals can be considered as having been achieved, as EC Wels was able to place itself in the top half of the table in its debut season.

Furthermore, the team continues to take part in the Lower Austrian and Upper Austrian state championships in order to enable the young players to slowly approach the level of the upper league, and maintains some youth teams for the age groups under 13 years.

Venue

The home of the people of Wels is the ice rink Wels / Rosenau , which can seat around 1,000 spectators. The hall began in 1979 as an open-air ice rink with simple wooden boards, which was renovated and roofed over in 1991. In 2005, the housing of the ice drink was finally completed and cabins were installed, which enabled regular operation and participation in the top league.
