eCryptfs

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The eCryptfs ( E nterprise Crypt ographic F ile s ystem ; German cryptographic company file system ) is a POSIX -compatible file-based software for disk encryption for Linux on Kernel plane. It is part of the Linux kernel from version 2.6.19. It works in a similar way to the Encrypting File System from Microsoft and FileVault from Apple .

eCryptfs uses a variant of the OpenPGP file format for encrypted data, enhanced with random access, which stores cryptographic metadata for each individual file.

It also encrypts file and directory names, making them longer. Therefore, the maximum number of characters in the name of the file is reduced.

history

eCryptfs is based on Cryptfs by Erez Zadok and was adapted by Mike Halcrow and submitted for inclusion in the Linux kernel.
