The IT technician , also called communication technician , is a three and a half year apprenticeship in the field of information technology in Austria . Usually, this training enables you to perform the tasks of a system administrator .

The IT technician learns how to read and use technical documents, how to obtain, set up and commission (installing, connecting, configuring, optimizing and testing) devices and networks and the necessary electronic data processing software. Finding, narrowing down, analyzing and correcting errors and user problems, as well as setting up and maintaining individual workstations and network workstations in IT is also taught.

Companies in the field of IT technology are eligible for training ; the specialist knowledge required for the lecturer according to the Vocational Training Act is limited to relevant apprenticeship training and 2 years of practical experience or five years of relevant professional experience.
