EICAR (own spelling "eicar") is a non-profit association with the aim of researching computer viruses and improving the development of anti-virus software . The original acronym EICAR is now a proper name . The organization has expanded its field of work and now deals with almost all areas of information security . That is why EICAR has been calling itself the European Expert Group for IT Security for some time . The chairman of the board is Rainer Fahs.

The association pursues its goals through congresses, expert forums, task forces and advisory boards.

The association is best known for the self-developed EICAR test file , which is used to test the function of anti-virus and anti-malware software.
