ELS model

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The ELS model is an astronomical thesis that deals with the formation and development of the Milky Way . It was published in 1962 by Olin Jeuck Eggen , Donald Lynden-Bell and Allan Rex Sandage . The name of the model is derived from the initial letters of the model developer (Eggen, Lynden-Bell, Sandage).

The thesis explains the formation of the Milky Way through a rapid collapse of a spherical, almost homogeneous protogalaxy with an assumed diameter of around 300,000 light years . According to the theory, the collapse of the protogalaxy happened within 100 million years, whereby it flattened and its rotational speed increased due to the conservation of angular momentum .

The ELS model lasted until around 1980.
