Brief description: Requirements for the specification phase, the planning phase, the implementation phase and the operating phase of information technology cabling
Latest edition 2018-10
ISO

The series of standards EN 50173 Information Technology - Application- neutral communication cable systems defines requirements for the specification phase, the planning phase, the implementation phase and the operating phase of information technology cabling in three parts. Both application- neutral communication cable systems from the DIN EN 50173 series and application-specific communication cable systems from the DIN EN 50098 series are taken into account.

Composition of the parts

The three parts, supplements and amendments to DIN EN 50174 are made up as follows:

DIN EN 50174-1 VDE 0800-174-1 Part 1: Installation specification and quality assurance DIN EN 50174-1: 2015-02; VDE 0800-174-1: 2015-02 2018-10

Subject matter of the norm

The standard defines four phases that lead to the successful installation of information technology cabling:

  1. Draft,
  2. Specification,
  3. Installation,
  4. Business.

The standard does not explicitly address requirements planning as described in DIN 18205 . When describing the necessary processes in the design phase, however, the basic ideas of requirements planning are taken up.

Part 1

Part 1 of the series of standards describes the installation specifications and quality assurance procedures. The specification in the sense of this standard defines the performance of the cabling. This can either be determined on the basis of the transmission link classes specified in EN 50173-1 or by using the so-called example version . With the second option, the minimum requirements for the components to be used, i.e. the cables and plug connections, are specified in accordance with the requirements. This also includes a textual specification of the type and scope of the services that the installer owes (list of services). The EN 50174-1 provides the planner with a kind of checklist with specifications for installation specifications and quality assurance. Accordingly, a quality plan must be drawn up before the start of the installation work, which must be agreed between the client and the contractor (installer). The quality plan must describe in detail at what point in time measurements are to be carried out on the installed cabling, with which measuring devices and measuring methods, to what extent they are to be carried out and how the measurements are to be documented. The avoidance of systematic installation errors achieved in this way can increase security for both contracting parties.

Part 2 & 3

Parts 2 and 3 are aimed at people who are involved in planning in the specification phase and in assembly in the installation phase. Here, EN 50174-2 inside and EN 50174-3 outside of buildings are to be applied. The standard lists the following persons for whom the document is important:

  • Architects, building planners and builders (property developers);
  • General contractor;
  • Developers, suppliers, installers, inspectors (auditors), maintenance personnel and owners of information technology cabling;
  • Public network and local service providers;
  • End user.
