title Application-neutral communication cable systems
Brief description: Service-independent, universally applicable cabling to support information and communication technology network applications
Latest edition 2018-10
ISO ISO / IEC 11801

The series of standards EN 50173 Information technology - application- neutral communication cable systems describes in six parts a service-independent, universally applicable cabling to support information and communication technology network applications. Both fiber optic and copper as well as symmetrical and asymmetrical cabling are described.

In the introductory article of the standards, it is shown that the standard was originally designed for office buildings. The basis of the application-neutral communication cable systems is a uniform topology, classification of transmission routes with defined properties and a uniform interface for connecting the end devices. With certain modifications, these basic properties can also be transferred to other areas of application. For this reason, other building uses were described in other parts: industrial locations (part 3), residential buildings (part 4) and data centers (part 5).

The international standard ISO / IEC 11801 is largely identical to the European standard.

Composition of the parts

The last revision of EN 50173 was completed by CENELEC / TC 215 in 2018. Like ISO / IEC 11801, the series appears in six parts. When developing the series of standards, care was taken to ensure that those requirements and properties that apply to several or all types of buildings are only defined once in Part 1. To implement an application-neutral communication cable system in a certain environment (type of building, location), parts 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 must therefore always be used together with part 1.

The six parts and supplements of DIN EN 50173 Information Technology - Application- neutral communication cable systems are made up as follows:

Interaction with other standards

After EN 50173 was published for the first time, it became clear that in order to implement cabling, in addition to the pure requirements for structure and transmission properties, also the description of the aspects of building planning, specification of cabling, planning and installation as well as quality assurance, including the specifications for acceptance of the installation , are necessary. As a result, the EN 50174 series of standards for specification and quality assurance, installation planning and installation practices was published in 2000 and 2003 respectively. Against this background, the interaction of the two series of standards EN 50173 and EN 50174 becomes apparent. Together, they describe the entire cabling process through to operation and support the planner or installer through all phases. The unity of the two standards is underlined by the requirement of EN 50173-x that conformity with this series of standards is only given if the requirements of the EN 50174 series of standards are also complied with in the practical implementation of the communication cable system. In addition to this, the EN 50310 standard for ensuring electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and the EN 61935-1 standard for the requirements for the metrological evaluation of installed copper cabling were created in 2000. In 2006, ISO / IEC 14763-3 stipulated the metrological evaluation of installed fiber optic cables.
