from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Julie Bar (* 1868 in Geneva ; † 1930 ibid) was a Swiss artist of Art brut .

life and work

Julie Bar suffered from epilepsy and was mentally disabled. Neglected by her parents, she never went to school and was admitted to a clinic at an early age. She was overwhelmed by household chores and odd jobs and remained unmarried.

Her surviving drawings date from 1916 to 1930, when she was moved to a private clinic. She drew mainly with pencil, sometimes with colored pencils, in sketchbooks, which she filled out completely. Her works have a repetitive character: alone or in groups, the same motifs (figures, animals, hybrids) are repeated in an identical manner; More elaborate compositions like the interior of a house are rarer. A group of works by Bar is in the Collection de l'Art Brut in Lausanne .
