The European standard EN 9100 provides the framework for a quality management system for organizations in the aerospace , space and defense industries based on the general quality management standard according to DIN EN ISO 9001 . It is technically equivalent to the AS 9100 standards from the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and the JISQ 9100 from the Japanese Aerospace Quality Group . As of 2018, there was no standardization within the framework of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The series of standards was drawn up in 1999 by the SAE and the European Association of Aerospace Industries and first published in German in 2003.

EN 9100

The EN 9100 series of standards distinguishes between the following types of organization in the aerospace and defense sectors:

  • EN 9100 design, development, production, assembly and maintenance
  • EN 9110 maintenance organizations
  • EN 9120 dealers and warehouse keepers

The EN 9100 series of standards largely coincides with the legal requirements of the relevant aviation authorities, which describe in detail the structure and content of a quality management system in their regulations (EASA Part 66, 21, 145, 147, M). The difference to the DIN EN ISO 9001 series of standards can be seen mainly in the chapters dealing with interfaces to customers and suppliers; z. B. Product conformity ( quality ) and punctual delivery performance must be monitored regularly and comprehensible risk assessments carried out. In addition, there are additional requirements that are geared towards long-term product maintenance, the sustainability of the product documentation and the special treatment of so-called "key features".

In the current version of EN 9100, the high level structure of ISO 9001: 2015 was adapted. At the same time, the new requirements of ISO 9001 for aviation standards became binding. In addition, new requirements for the prevention of counterfeit parts, product safety and the consideration of human factors have been added.

The EN 9120 standard for dealers and warehouse keepers enables this business group to make use of an internationally recognized quality management system. Until the introduction of this standard, this economic group had in principle no possibility of being certified according to an internationally valid aviation standard, since both the American aviation authority FAA and its European counterpart EASA only deal with this branch of the economy marginally.

Aviation companies of the EN 91XX series, such as manufacturers, maintenance staff and dealers, are recorded in the publicly accessible OASIS database, the Online Aerospace Supplier Information System .

Obtaining an EN 9100

The audit process ( certification ) is based on EN 9101. In this context, it defines audit requirements for aerospace, space and defense organizations. This defines the requirements for the preparation and execution of the auditing process.

The EN 9101: 2015 edition, valid as of 2016, defines templates for documenting the audit results, e.g. B. English Process Effectiveness Assessment Report (PEAR), Objective Evidence Record (OER), Nonconformity Report (NCR) and QMS process matrix. In the audit according to EN 9101: 2015, one focus is on evaluating the effectiveness of the company's processes . Therefore, a comprehensively described process landscape with interfaces, concrete process objectives and process-oriented management techniques should be available and implemented. If the objectives of individual processes are not met, corrective action plans must be submitted as evidence of the continuous improvement of the system.

Requirements for accredited certification bodies and auditors are described in EN 9104 Requirements for certification procedures for quality management systems in the aerospace and defense sectors.
